hat for husband

20140311_212642_Richtone(HDR)– newest finished object

So these posts are very few and far between and I’m hoping to change that. I started this blog because of my horrible memory. I want to be able to look back and remember what I knitted, who I knitted for and all the beautiful yarn I have.

Currently knitting a black tweed Donegal hat for my husband to replace the one I ruined. He has about 5 of these hats with the same yarn and pattern but different colors. Don’t know what is so special about this pattern but he loves it. I decided to hand wash one of them to see if it would shrink and it did quite the opposite. Β It’s about 300% larger. Lessons learned- washing alpaca just expands your knitted garment.

Will post a photo soon πŸ™‚ good night all and happy knitting!

Picking out a sewing machine

So I’ve been pretty bad about keeping up with this. Alaska weather just makes me too sleepy at the end of the day to do anything! Or maybe I’ve been to occupied with sewing/knitting. That’s probably it!

Anywho, since my last post I’ve started a shawlette with lovely fingering weight malabrigo, and have sewn up a polka dot clutch and a dolman top.

I’ve recently started sewing again but this time I think I’m going to take it more seriously. Two years ago I purchased a $75 brother machine through amazon. Looked like I was getting a lot for my $75 and it was a good way to just get familiar with sewing. Initially I was really interested in making plushies- I mean who doesn’t like plushies! Well lately I haven’t seen anything in the stores worth buying so I’m going to attempt to make whatever I want myself!

Unfortunately, $75 brother machine doesn’t appreciate long sewing times and starts to eat my project if it’s had enough.

After a long week and a half of deciding between a Janome DC 2011 or a slightly used bernina 215

I’ve finally decided on the Bernina! On paper I would be getting more for my money with the janome BUT my gut instincts tell me to go with a bernina. After reading forum after forum it seems like people really enjoy their bernina so hopefully I’ve made the right decision.

Hope to keep up with this more! Will post pictures when my machine gets here πŸ™‚ its on a craft cruise til Sunday!

Day 3 – going through the yarn stash

So I haven’t been very good about writing everyday but I’ll maybe shoot for every week? While I was on my mini vacation in San Francisco, I had a whole day to discover the city on my own. Of course on my to do list was to find a local yarn shop as there are only two in Anchorage. Lucky me! 10 minutes away was ArtFibers nothing but beautiful hand spun yarns!

20120511-221314.jpg I apologize for the poor quality, I am using an iPad 2 and dont have the fancy camera the new one has.
My purchase: 600 yards of lace weight CAMUSE yarn, a blend of camel and cashmere. I still don’t have a project but I’m leaning towards a summer shawl. Prior to my purchase, I told myself- no more buying yarn without a planned project! But hey, I was on vacation and there was no way I was going to leave empty handed!
Well I’ve got two basset hounds to attend to.

Puppies + Yarn + Needles = not a very good mix but I am in love with both!

Hopefully next post I will have a project for my lovely yarn!

Day 2 – Malabrigo infinity scarf finally finished!

Didn’t get any knitting done. I was hoping to get the baby blanket I’ve been working on for MONTHS done by this week; don’t think that’s going to happen! But, I did fit in 30 minutes of cardio in and finally blocked the Pont Neuf Infinity Scarf using malabrigo rios- aguas. It took me a while to find the perfect pattern and eventually I gave up and just decided to knit the next infinity scarf pattern I found. Since malabrigo looks completely different (to me at least) on the skein than knitted up, I was a little worried about it looking sock-ish. But here it is! Blocked and pinned, drying on my blocking mats! Hopefully it’s dry by tomorrow morning πŸ™‚

Well hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to finish that blanket, clean out my closet, fit in some cardio and work on the lace infinity scarf I’ve been ignoring for the past month.

Getting Started!

So I decided it was time to start a blog. I’ve been knitting since October of last year and am now a knit/sew/DIY/craft-aholic. I’m pretty forgetful so I thought a blog would be a great way to keep track of all the things I’m knitting/making. Oh and sewing, as soon as I get home I’m going to open up my Craftsy class and get started!
